Quelques questions adressées par MADADATOUR au MAKI LODGE après le salon de l'ITM 2012 du 31 Juin au 02 Juin qui s'est déroulé à Antananarivo (MADAGASCAR).
Racontez nous l'histoire du Maki Lodge ? Qu'est ce qui vous a amené à ouvrir cet établissement et pourquoi avoir choisi Le Maki Lodge ?
En fait cet établissement est un bien familial qui a été créé en 1982. Autrefois c'était un petit restaurant et qui servait de point de chute sur Nosy Komba pour accueillir les touristes venant de Nosy Bé qui venaient voir les fameux lémuriens. Resté quelques années fermés (13 ans), je décidais fin 2006 d'en créer un hôtel afin de donner également la possibilité aux touristes de passage de pouvoir y séjourner. J'entrepris donc des travaux qui ont duré 3 ans et demi. Des travaux d'extension et de rénovation ont été entrepris. Cela n'a pas été simple puisqu'il fallait prévoir l'adduction d'eau, l'électricité et l'eau chaude sur une île. En ce temps-là en Europe on parlait du photovoltaïque mais c'était encore méconnu sur Madagascar. C'était assez précaire de s'investir dans cette énergie nouvelle. J'ai créé donc un établissement comprenant un restaurant totalement rénové avec une surface d'exploitation et annexes nouvelles de : 300 m². (Auparavant il y avait : 120 m² sans les annexes) et l'ajout de 5 bungalows d'une quarantaine de mètre carré sur une surface très irrégulière du fait que l'implantation du lodge se trouve sur un rocher. Tout a été fait en adéquation avec la nature qui nous entoure, le nom de cet établissement est en rapport essentiellement au nom attribué aux lémuriens de l'île connu sur tous les guides touristiques. LE MAKI. Je me suis dit pourquoi ne pas valoriser notre patrimoine touristique de notre île en donnant le même nom à l'hôtel.
Quelle est la particularité du Maki Lodge, Qu'est-ce qui distingue le Maki Lodge de ses concurrents locaux ?
Le lodge et ses bungalows surplombent la mer. Le respect de l'environnement et de la nature est omniprésent. Tout est construit avec des matériaux locaux. La créativité et l'originalité sont les maitres mots. C'est du "Made in Madagascar". Son architecture avec ses formes arrondies composées de pierre de taille de granit montées sans joints apparents et de bois fait sa particularité.
Cette année, Madagascar a accueilli les assises internationales du Tourisme durable et éthique, Est-ce que le Maki Lodge se retrouve dans cette logique de Tourisme durable ? Et comment concrètement cela se manifeste-t-il au sein de votre établissement ?
Vous parlez d'un tourisme durable, en effet, depuis quelques années le monde est en train de se tourner vers l'écologie, un monde avec une pollution réduite, une culture bio, un facteur économique au développement durable ET mondiale est en train de naitre. Afin de faire partie de ce mouvement et de soutenir cette cause nous avons suivi cette action.
Nous avons contribué à cette éthique par le biais de plusieurs actions c'est-à-dire :
- L'intégration du lodge avec la nature qui l'entoure
- L'utilisation d'énergies propres telles que : photovoltaïque, eau chaude solaire, eau de source, tri des déchets et compost,
- Création d'une association au sein du village afin de sensibiliser et améliorer les conditions d'hygiène et de vie des villageois en s'occupant de l'assainissement des lieux. (cf. Nosy Komba Solidarité)
- Mis en place d'un commerce équitable au sein des villageois
- Utilisation des ressources naturelles du village (légumes, fruits et produit de la pêche : crustacés)
Vous étiez présent au Salon ITM au Carlton du 31 au 2 Juin 2012 ? Quel bilan en tirez-vous ?
D'une part, c'est une première pour nous puisque nous avons reçu beaucoup de répercussions positives pour notre lodge, notre structure est toute nouvelle, elle a à peine un an. Le fait d'y avoir participé, nous a permis de nous faire connaitre sur le plan national, auprès des autres prestataires touristiques et aussi auprès du grand public
D'autre part ce salon est une première à Madagascar. Puisque pour la première fois d'autres opérateurs sont venus de l'extérieur pour connaître les différentes prestations que pouvaient proposer le pays en termes d'hébergement, de services, de prestations et de circuits. C'est un succès à la hauteur de 3500 visiteurs sur trois jours de salon !!! Les quatre régions des Offices du Tourismes réunis pour la première fois dans un salon international de Madagascar.
Nous avons eu également la présence du Directeur Exécutif du Tourisme Mondial et pour l'avenir nous comptons sur la collaboration et la coopération régionale touristique des îles de l'Océan Indien à travers le concept des Iles Vanilles.
Comment abordez-vous la saison touristique à venir ?
Nous pensons que la saison touristique sera sereine, si tous les ingrédients sont réunis dans le même mixeur, d'ailleurs nous devrons avoir une fréquentation plus importante de vols à destination de Madagascar incessamment sous peu en provenance des régions voisines.
Un dernier mot ?
Nous espérons que Madagascar dépasse le cap des 300 000 touristes pour la saison 2012/2013, et que le pays devienne le fer de lance du tourisme dans l'Océan Indien.

Racontateci la storia del Maki Lodge, come mai avete aperto questa struttura e perchè avete scelto il nome di Maki Lodge ??
Questa struttura è un bene di famiglia, creato nel 1982. All'epoca era un piccolo ristorante per accogliere i turisti in escursione da Nosy Bé, per ammirare i lemuri. E rimasto chiuso per molti anni. Nel 2006 ho pensato di farne un piccolo albergo sempre per i turisti di passaggio. I lavori sono durati 3 anni, lavori di estensione e di rinnovo. Non è stata un cosa semplice poichè ci voleva anche l'allacciamento dell'acqua e dell'elettricità, essendo l'isola sprovvista di questo.
In europa si parlava del voltaico, sconoscimento in Madagascar, dunque ho deciso d'investire in questo campo, benche un po rischioso e dispendioso. Ho creato questa struttura che comprende un ristorante completamente rinnovato, di una superficie di 300 m² con gli annessi (prima c'erano solo 120 m²), 5 bungalow di una quarantina di m² su una superficie molto irregolare poiche il lodge si trova su una roccia apicco sul mare. Tutto è stato fatto in armonia con la natura e anche il nome è stato dato per ricordare i lemuri che abitano l'isola e che ne sono l'attrazione turistica.
Quali sono le particolarità del Maki Lodge ? Che cosa lo distingue dagli altri concorrenti locali ?
I bungalow del lodge sono a picco sul mare. Il rispetto della natura e dell'ambiente è omnipresente. Tutto è stato costruito con del materiale locale. La creatività e l'originalità sono la parola chiave. E del "Made In Madagascar". La sua architettura è rotonda, composta di pietre di granito montate senza giuntere apparenti e con molto legno, è cio fà la sua caratteristica.
Quest'anno Madagascar ha accolto le sedute internationali del turismo, durevole e etico. Il Maki Lodge si trova in questa logica del turismo durevole ? Come si manifesta concretamente nella vostra struttura ?
Voi parlate di un turismo durevole, in effetti da qualche anno il mondo s'interessa all'ecologia, alla cultura bio, alla riduzione della polluzione, sta per nascere un fattore economico allo sviluppo durevole e mondiale. Con lo scopo di sostenere abbiamo seguito questa azione :
La messa in opera di un commercio equo nel villaggio, utilizzando le risorse naturali è cioè : Legumi, frutta, prodotti della pesca e artigianato.
Eravate presenti alla fiera ITM al Carlton dal 31 al 02 giungno 2012 ?
Da una parte per noi è stata una "premiere" perchè abbiamo avuto molti consensi per il nostro lodge; la nostra struttura è recente, abbiamo aperto da un anno. Il fatto di aver partecipato ci ha permesso di farci conoscere sul piano internazionale turistico e anche dal pubblico.
D'altra parte questa fiera è anche una "première" in Madagascar, poichè per la prima volta, degli altri operatori turistici stranieri sono venuti per conoscere le diverse prestazioni. E stato un successo !
3500 persone hanno visitato questa fiera in tre giorni ! Le Quattro regioni degli ufficie del turismo si sono reunite per la prima volta in una fiera internazionale in Madagascar. Abbiamo avuto anche la presenza del Direttore Esecutivo del Turismo Mondiale e in seguito contiamo sulla collaborazione regionale turistica delle isole dell'oceano Indiano raggruppate sotto il nome di isole Vaniglia.
Come abordate la prossima stagione turistica ?
Pensiamo che la stagione turistica sarà serena se tutti i fattori si riuniscono. Dovremo pero avere una frequenza più importante di voli su Madagascar provenienti dalle altre regioni.
Un'ultima parola ?
Speriamo che Madagascar superi i 300 000 turisti per la stagione 2012/2013 e che il paese diventi il punto di partenza del turismo nell'Oceano Indiano.

Some questions addressed by Madatours to Maki Lodge after the International Tourism Fair from 31th to 02 June 2012 held in Antananarivo (Madagascar).
Please tells us about the story behind Maki Lodge. What made you want to open a hotel and why Le Maki Lodge in particular ?
The original building belonged to our family and was built in 1982. Previously, this used to be a small restaurant and acted as the main base to welcome tourists coming from Nosy-Be as they came to watch lemurs. It got closed down for a few years and in 2006 I decided to re-open it and transform it into a hotel in order to provide an opportunity for tourists to come and stay. The renovation and extension works were challenging with the installation of water and electricity on the island and took 3 and half years to complete. We used the photovoltaic system, which was well known in Europe however this method had still not been introduced in Madagascar, it did feel precarious at the time to invest in this method.
My hotel comprises the newly renovated restaurant with its grounds which have a total surface area of 300m2 (previously 120m2) and now include 5 bungalows built on top of a large rocky area (peering over the sea), using an approximately 40m2.
We have ensured that the hotel is in harmony with nature and its environment, hence its name LE MAKI considering that this, what the Island is most well-known for lemurs. I felt it relevant and important to give it a name that would be in line with its famous wildlife.
What is particular about Maki Lodge ? What distinguishes it from other hotels and lodges in the area ?
The Lodge peers over the water. We have built a hotel that respects its environment and nature. This infrastructure was developed and built by local workmen using local resources. You could say this was «made in Madagascar ». Its architecture is special too; we used rounded shaped Granit stones with no apparent joinery.
This year Madagascar hosted an international conference on sustainable and ethical tourism. Does Maki Lodge adhere to sustainable tourism ? If so, how ?
Indeed for a few years now already we are all becoming more environmentally aware and wanting to be « green » and moving towards ecology, reducing pollution, growing organic produce ; all are economic act ants and fundamental to a sustainable development globally. We fully adhere to this thinking and have invested in the following way:
- Full integration of the Lodge within its surrounding natural habitat
- We use natural resources only such as: photovoltaic system, hot water generated by the sun, local mineral water, we recycle our waste into compost.
- We've developed a voluntary organization within the village with the aim to educate and thereby improve hygienic and living conditions of the villagers by taking care of the cleanliness of the area. (Nosy Komba Solidarité)
- We have developed a fair trade business within the village
- We make use of the natural resources that the villagers produce - vegetables, fruits and shell fish
You had an exhibition stand at the Salon ITM at the Carlton hotel from the 31st of May to the 2nd of June. What did you think of it ?
Two things: Number one is that this is the first time that we appear at an event like this, being that we are brand new and only opened a year ago and yet have received an awful lot of positive feedback already. The fact that we participated at this event, allowed us to promote ourselves on a national level to both tourism agencies and the public.
Secondly, this event is brand new at Madagascar and this enticed many tour operators and agencies from abroad to come and understand what Madagascar had to offer in terms of accommodation, tourism services, circuits and activities. It was a huge success with 3500 visitors over a 3 day-period!!!! The four regional Malagasy tourism offices were present and reunited for the first time at such an event. The executive director of World Tourism Organization also came. We hope that Madagascar and the many other Indian Ocean islands will collaborate and work together on the concept of the « Vanilla Islands ».
what do you think the next season will bring ?
We believe that the next season will be good, if all the right ingredients are present and combined together. We should actually shortly see an increase in flight numbers to Madagascar coming from the neighboring countries.
Anything else ?
We are hoping that for season 2012/2013 Madagascar will surpass itself and receive well above 300 000 tourists which would make it a strong destination for the Indian Ocean.
